Why Collect Porcelain Fairy Dolls?
![]() |
One of the most beloved subcategories of the porcelain doll are porcelain fairy dolls. Many collectors have had a fascination with fairies since childhood. These delicate, fluttering creatures are the stuff of fairy tales and vivid imaginations, and are just as appealing to many adults as they are to young girls. Collecting fairy dolls is fun and can take you on a flight of fancy, back to the place of creativity and wonder that you enjoyed as a child. Many dolls even gain value, if you keep them in their original packaging and keep them safe from dirt, dust and damage.
The porcelain fairy doll is made very much like the traditional porcelain doll. Bisque is normally used for the hands and face. This is because it can be made to look like real skin. The features are often hand painted on and are delicate and beautiful. Clothing for fairies is usually gossamer dresses and gowns that are light and floaty. Then of course, there are the wings. Some fairy dolls have netted wings while others have porcelain wings that are painted. Some dolls have realistic feathered wings.
You will find that fairy dolls range in size from tiny to large. Small dolls are often created as ornaments to be hung on Christmas trees. Others are the size of a traditional doll, while others are quite large. One of the most popular types of fairy doll offered today are those by Amy Brown. Amy Brown is a renowned watercolor artist whose works have been made into dolls and figurines. Jessica Galbreth is another great artist whose images of fairies are sold in figurine form as well as on paper. Many collectors prefer collecting not just dolls and ornaments from these artists, but their actual artwork as well. Prices for their art range from hundreds for an original to less than $20 for a small print.
Porcelain fairy dolls make the perfect gift for a young lady. Most every girl, unless she is a serious tomboy, will love opening a prettily wrapped box to reveal a delicate fairy doll. Many girls, and even grown women, like to collect fairies. Fairy dolls are just one type of collectible in this category. You will also find artwork, jewelry, home decor and even apparel that features the fairy motif. Fairies take us on a journey from everyday drudgery to a magical fantasy land where we can commune with our inner child and experience the joy of unspoiled imagination.
