Porcelain Dolls -- Musical and Beautiful
![]() |
Collecting porcelain dolls is a fun and often lucrative hobby. Many dolls, if cared for properly, will increase in value over the years. You will find a wide variety of porcelain dolls to collect. There are small dolls, large dolls, baby dolls, Victorian dolls and even porcelain dolls musical choices that play songs when wound up. The musical porcelain doll is somewhat of a hybrid between the collectible music box and the doll. These dolls often play the same beloved tunes and sound similar to a music box, but they are dolls.
A musical doll makes a great gift for a doll collector or young lady in your life. Even if your daughter, granddaughter, sister or niece does not collect porcelain dolls, they will love to receive a musical doll. They may even decide to begin a collection of their own. Musical dolls can be handed down from mother to daughter and become a treasured family heirloom that sees many generations. At the very least, one of these dolls makes a gorgeous addition to your existing porcelain doll collection.
Like most all porcelain dolls today, the musical doll will primarily be made from bisque. Bisque is porcelain that has a matte finish, while china is porcelain that has been glazed. Both bisque and china begins as clay, and are fired under extremely high temperatures to create the hard finish. Porcelain has been a top material for doll making since the early 19th century. Before then, dolls were made from bone, clay, fabric, wood and even paper. These days, plastic is a popular material from which many dolls are made. Plastic and fabric are great for dolls that will be played with by children, but porcelain rules for the purposes of collecting and investing.
When shopping for porcelain dolls musical selections, the Internet is probably the best place to look. You may not be able to find a musical doll in your local toy store but you can definitely find lots of them for sale on the Internet. Even an online auction site like Ebay is a good place to look when shopping for collectible dolls. Some of these dolls are new while some are used. Be sure to only deal with sellers that have a good history of positive feedback. When you shop online for porcelain musical dolls, you open yourself up to an entire world of selection that you likely cannot find in your local stores.
